Gisblog in OGC Newsletter

Two recent posts from gisblog have been mentioned and commented on in the latest OGC newsletter.

The OGC’s comment on OGC WMS Becomes ISO Standard:

OGC staff responds: OGC has worked with ISO for many years. The OGC members agreed to release WMS to ISO to be approved as an ISO standard. The OGC and ISO had a joint edit team that worked on WMS resulting in IS19128:2005 which is identical to WMS 1.3. Each organization has its own vision and process. While we understand that some documents seem to take quite a while to be approved, we also believe that input from ISO to OGC and from OGC to ISO has been most valuable in creating the best standards possible.

There is another comment on Importance of GIS Blogs:

The editor notes that there’s still quite a lot of confusion, in the blogosphere and elsewhere, between open source and open standards.

OGC staff responds: “Open source” refers to software products where source code is made available freely for all to use and change. “Open standards” refer to interfaces and encodings that enable interoperability between various software applications and data. In the OGC, open standards are developed using an open, consensus process, are non-discriminatory in their use, are royalty free, and are publicly available for anyone to implement anywhere at anytime. OpenGIS standards are implemented broadly in all kinds of commercial and open source software solutions.

Maybe I missed the point here, but the post is not talking about open source or open standards at all (at least not as far as I can see…) Maybe the comment refers to the term standardization community, which is not the same as the open source community?

By the way, the monthly OGC newsletter’s editor is Adena Schutzberg, who is also one of the most active editors over at All Points Blog.

This is really amazing, that we are actually recognized by the outside world. But I am really wondering, why the newsletter does not contain any hint to the ongoing public comment phase of the upcoming Web Processing Service Specification (WPS).

However I will blog about the WPS (and actually my personal thoughts) in the near future.

  2. Patrick Maué says:

Hmm, the press release about the WPS came out on on January 5th, the newsletter is from last year. It’s most probably covered in the next newsletter.

  3. Theodor Foerster says:

Please mind, that the news on the OGC website are still the news from december 2005. We are here talking about the new one, which was delivered via mail. As soon as the recent newsletter is available on the OGC website I will tell so. Sorry for confusion.

  4. Theodor Foerster says:

Ok, now the newsletter issue January 2006 is available online on the OGC website.
